History in 140 characters

Another Twitter landmark was set recently, when a British mountaineer sent the first tweet from Mount Everest's summit. @KentonCool posted the following message from the Everest summit on 6th May: "Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from the top of the world thanks to a weak 3G signal & the awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 handset!"

Which led Stylist to wonder how history may have been reported had the micro-blogging website (or, indeed, smartphones) exisited a couple of hundred years earlier.
