Jameela Jamil criticises Kim Kardashian for promoting appetite suppressants

Kim Kardashian posted an advert promoting sweets that prevent you from getting hungry, and Jameela Jamil is not here for it. 

Jameela Jamil has been voice in the body positive movement that’s been growing progressively louder. 

Not only has she started her own campaign that concentrates on the weight of a person’s happiness instead of their body, and taken a no bullshit approach to her social media (where she promotes honesty in the face of Instagram-flawless facades). But, most recently she called out one of the biggest celebrities on the planet for promoting appetite suppressant lollipops. 

After seeing a picture posted by Kim Kardashian, in which she advertises the new product produced by The Flat Tummy Company, Jamil took to Twitter to address the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star. 

Alongside a string of screenshots of Kardashian’s post, Jamil tweeted: “No. F**k off. No. You terrible and toxic influence on young girls. 

“I admire their mother’s branding capabilities, she is an exploitative but innovative genius, however this family makes me feel actual despair over what women are reduced to.”

Jamil then followed this up with another tweet, emphasising how important it is to fuel your body and that forging friendships and carving a career are more worthwhile goals. 

She continued: “MAYBE don’t take appetite suppressors and eat enough to fuel your BRAIN and work hard and be successful. And to play with your kids. And to have fun with your friends. And to have something to say about your life at the end, other than ‘I had a flat stomach.’”

Jamil’s tweet received a huge amount of support, with legions of fans sharing their thoughts on how damaging it is for a hugely influential figure to recommend not eating. Many also drew on their own experiences of eating disorders and how they have felt pressured to lose weight. 

One Twitter user said: “That’s awful! I know first hand how comments like that can blow someone into a full blown eating disorder.”

Another said: “Thank you. Had an eating disorder for 14 years. If I had seen this ad as a teenager, I would have been running for this product. Despicable.”

Jamil later updated her followers with the news that Kardashian had removed the advert from her social media, presumably because of the heat she had received for lending her support to the product. 

She wrote: “Kim took the tweet down. Well done twitter people. Bravo.” 

Before thanking all of the Twitter users that shared their own stories, writing: “Thank you for all your excellent and interesting tweets today. And for your personal stories of eating disorders you have shared. 

“I am in awe of your strength and proud of all of us for finally saying no. But…Some women on here trying to hold up the patriarchy like…”

We love how Jamil continues to tirelessly challenge society’s perception of beauty and tear down the damaging expectations that women and girls hold up for themselves thanks to products like this.
