Following the announcement that Latin pop legends Jennifer Lopez and Shakira are teaming up to headline the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show, the internet has excitedly predicted that their upcoming performance will go down as one of the best of all time.
There were rumours in the wake of her Oscar-worthy performance as the formidable strip club matriarch Ramona in Hustlers, and now, we’ve finally got confirmation that Jennifer Lopez will be headlining the 2020 Super Bowl LIV halftime show.
What we didn’t anticipate, however, was that we’d get two iconic pop singers on the same stage. But yesterday evening, the NFL and Pepsi revealed that J.Lo is teaming up with Shakira for the upcoming halftime show at at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
J.Lo, who’s been making waves this week for her sensational catwalk in the Versace show at Milan Fashion Week in a replica of the iconic green dress she wore to the 2000 Grammys, took to Twitter to announce the news.
“This is happening. 02.02.20”, she wrote alongside a photo of herself and Shakira. “Going to set the world on fire.”
Shakira followed up by instructing the world to “Get ready,” before adding, “It doesn’t get any bigger than this! So excited about getting on that #SuperBowlLIV #PepsiHalftime stage! @JLo #nosvemosMiami #happybirthdaytomeee”.
In a statement, Lopez said that she “couldn’t wait to show what us girls can do on the world’s biggest stage”, while Shakira called the opportunity “a true American dream”.
“I’m so honoured to be taking on one of world’s biggest stages to represent Latinos from the US and all over the world - and to top it off, on my birthday!,” she added.
Even with Shakira’s warning, the world clearly wasn’t ready for the announcement of an iconic Latina power duo taking to the Super Bowl, because the internet, understandably, has gone crazy with its reactions.
Within minutes of the news, both singers were worldwide trends on Twitter, with fans around the world declaring that the performance will not only steal the show, but go down in history as the best of all time.
“Replace the whole damn game with a four hour Shakira/J.Lo concert,” one Twitter exclaimed, which we would certainly not object to.
People were quick to celebrate the singers’ Latin heritage, with one user excitedly calling on women to mobilise. “Latin women rise,” she exclaimed.
Others were excited that the duo would be bringing their “Latin excellence” to Miami’s predominantly Spanish-speaking neighbourhood.
Naturally, people were dreaming up how the halftime performance would go down.
“Shakira and JLo making an entrance with ICE inmate uniforms …Starts She Wolf intro and the make an amazing dance with the CHAINS. Then they BREAK THE CHAINS, Making a powerful message of FREEDOM THE POWER! #SuperBowl,” speculated one user.
It seems there’s a lot of love for She Wolf. Could Shakira’s choreo make a comeback?
Some people just really want J.Lo to recreate that incredible pole dance routine from Hustlers, though.
Others, meanwhile, were quick to poke fun at the US administration. “If you think conservatives were mad when Beyoncé brought Black Panthers to the Super Bowl, wait till Shakira shows up on their screens speaking Spanish,” one Twitter used joked.
Whatever the setlist, we know that J.Lo and Shakira will utterly slay this performance. In the meantime, it’s a pretty good time to revisit the entire back catalogue of these two Latin legends. *hums Hips Don’t Lie for the rest of the day*
