Jonathan Van Ness announced his endorsement of Elizabeth Warren on Wednesday (25 September), but the Queer Eye star wasn’t prepared for what happened next.
There are few things more joyful than this video of Jonathan Van Ness receiving the phone call of his life from the one and only 2020 presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren. There, I’ve said it.
After announcing his endorsement of Senator Warren – or as Van Ness calls her, “fierce future president” – the Queer Eye star received a phone call from the lady herself thanking him for his support. In a video posted to Van Ness’ Twitter and Instagram, we see the whole interaction unfold, and it’s just as pure, positive and generally wonderful as you might expect.
“I wanted to give you a call just to say thank you, I’m glad we’re going to be in this fight together side by side,” Warren begins. “I love the endorsement. And for all the right reasons.” Meanwhile, Van Ness is literally beside himself with excitement, squirming in his chair as Warren speaks.
“Thank you so much!” he replies, leaning forward in his chair in pure glee. “Well you know I have to tell you when I realised… – it was at the last debates, and I was like, ‘This health insurance industry is a fucking racket’!”
As the call progresses, Van Ness just gets more and more excited – and it’s probably my favourite thing I’ve seen this month.
“I’m so excited to be shoulder-to-shoulder with you too,” he continues. “I can’t believe you called! Let me know how I can be of service. I really want to help.”
“Yup. We’re going to do it together,” Warren replies.
Then, in what is probably the best moment of the entire video, Van Ness floods into a torrent of admiration for the Senator – and it’s probably the pep talk of the century.
“Senator Warren. Go save America!” he says. “We got to take the Senate, we’re going to take congress back, well, we already have congress. We’ve got to get the senate back, and then we got to get you in the White House. And we’re just going to sort everything out. So you go save America.”
In a time when we’re all feeling a bit disillusioned at the state of politics, it’s encouraging to see two people speaking so passionately about creating change.
After announcing his endorsement of Warren, Van Ness shared the reasoning behind his decision to endorse the presidential candidate – and it’s all to do with how he manages his HIV, a diagnosis he revealed at the weekend.
“The moment I knew I was endorsing Elizabeth Warren was last month when I misplaced my HIV meds,” Van Ness wrote on his Twitter. “It cost $3500 to replace them out of pocket with “amazing” platinum level health insurance. Healthcare shouldn’t be for profit ever, it’s a human right.”
Alongside her dedication towards revolutionising the healthcare system in America, Warren has pledged to prioritise action on climate change and help to eliminate student loan debt.
