Kate Beckinsale and Michael Sheen were together for eight years, calling time on their relationship in 2003.

However, owing to their co-parenting of 18-year-old daughter, Lily, the pair remain very close. So, when Lily celebrated her high school graduation earlier this week, of course both of her parents were there beside her, to support her every step of the way.

And Beckinsale has reiterated the fact that they will remain a family unit forever.

Taking to Instagram, Beckinsale shared a black-and-white video of her, Sheen and Lily walking to the graduation ceremony.

Alongside the slo-mo footage, the Underworld actor wrote: “We may not be a conventional family but we have love and humour and respect and care.

“I am proud to have walked this far with both of you and to have @lily_beckinsale walk us into the future. God bless love, and good hearts, and loyalty and friendship, and may we all have more and more of it and make more and more of it in the world.”

The 43-year-old joked on another post: “PHRESH out of high school @lily_beckinsale . I am so proud of you I have nearly forgiven you for saying other parents don't bring air horns to the ceremony that was a LIE.

“Go get it my brilliant gorgeous girl.”

Beckinsale and Sheen have always defied convention when it comes to their relationship: the exes spent Christmas and Thanksgiving together last year, and Beckinsale has forged a strong bond with Sheen’s long-term girlfriend, US comedian Sarah Silverman.

Speaking in an interview with ES Magazine in December, the actor said: “[Sheen and I] have not been together far longer than we were ever together. But I really love him and like him and we make each other roar with laughter.

“I really love his girlfriend as well, and we are really lucky that we both get on, and Lily gets on great with her.

“Having as many strong females in your teenage daughter’s life as possible is a good thing.”

And, in another interview with InStyle magazine, Beckinsale reiterated: “We are still very close and [our daughter] sees us around each other. He's absolutely one of my most favourite people ever. I love him dearly - I would miss him dreadfully if he wasn't in my life.”

Sheen, similarly, has said in the past: “Kate will always be one of the most important people in my life. I have real love for her.”

These guys have definitely got that co-parenting thing nailed.
