Officials have announced that women-only carriages are to be introduced on the Seoul metro network this month because of a rise in sexual assaults.
The rush hour commutes are so claustrophobic they’ve been nicknamed the ‘hell ride’ and groping and other sexual crimes spiked to 80% between 2009 and 2010. Women have been pushing for the move, which is already in place in other Asian countries including Japan.
The system was previously introduced in 1992 but men began boarding the exclusive carriages in defiance and it was suspended after eight months. Officials have promised this time security guards will prevent men from travelling in the carriages.
