Kristen Bell is set to become the very first host of the SAG Awards – and will only be joined by other women on stage.

If the Golden Globes are anything to go by, this year’s award shows look set to be much more female-focused.

After the success of the Time’s Up movement, which saw actresses including Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman and Reese Witherspoon wear black to stand in solidarity with victims of harassment, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are trying to follow suit.

Women will be taking centre stage at the SAG Awards on 21 January – with actress Kristen Bell starring as the host (a first for the annual event).

“She’s not our first female host, she’s our first host, period, and that says a lot,” said Screen Actors Guild Awards committee member Elizabeth McLaughlin, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“I think she’s going to do an amazing job. She’s hilarious and charming and smart, and I think she’s really going to set the tone for the awards this year.”

The Good Place actress will only be joined by other women on stage throughout the evening, as awards are given out for outstanding performances in film and prime time television.

“This year at the SAG Awards, we are celebrating women,” continued McLaughlin. “So, with the exception of the winners of our actor categories, there will only be women onstage.”

Bell, who has long been an advocate for gender equality, is ready for the conversation around the #MeToo movement to continue.

“I’m not the first female host,” Bell told the New York Times“I’m the first host. The fact that a female was chosen to be the first one means my genitals become irrelevant.”

“An awards show is not as serious as the conversation deserves to be,” Bell continued.

“And this night will celebrate women more than any other SAG Awards has, and possibly more than any other awards show has.”

And Bell made a point of saying how supportive her husband Dax Shepard has been before she takes to the stage later this month.

“He doesn’t really give out pointers or advice so much as he gives out unending support, which is very nice,” Bell said

And people have taken to Twitter to share their delight in Bell presenting this year’s awards:

“I’m excited to see the SAG Awards! Kristen Bell you are amazing in everything!,” one user wrote.

“Kristen Bell is hosting the SAG Awards 2018!? I’m so excited!,” another user posted.

The tide has indeed turned, ladies. We can’t wait to see Bell in action.

The 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will air live on Sunday 21 January in the United States.
