Yesterday’s Democratic National Convention was quite the historic occasion, as Hilary Clinton was officially announced as the Democratic presidential nominee, making her the first woman in history to hold that position.
Additionally, there was a hilarious speech-cum-comedy skit that proved that the Democratic party is much more fun than the Republican party.
Actresses Lena Dunham and America Ferrera, both long-time Clinton supporters, took to the stage and tore apart the ingrained sexism and racism of Republican nominee, Donald Trump. The pair used the speech to promote how Clinton would bring Americans together, while Trump would tear them apart.
“Hi, I’m Lena Dunham and according to Donald Trump, my body is probably a two,” started the Girls star - referring to Trump's numerical rating of women's appearances.
“And I’m America Ferrera and according to Donald Trump, I’m probably a rapist,” said the Ugly Betty star, referring to Trump’s comments on Mexicans, in which he said that "they are rapists."
“You’re not Mexican,” quipped Dunham
“And President Obama isn’t Kenyan, but that hasn’t stopped Donald,” replied Ferrera.
Following their opening skit, the pair went on to say that:
“The un-funny fact is, this man would have you believe that our differences are more important than what unites us.”
Ferrera then said that: “The truth is that this country was founded on the belief that what sets us apart – race, language, religion, sexual orientation – should not dissolve what binds us.”
While the pair acknowledged people might not want to take their political advice from celebrities, they said that the severity of the situation meant they must speak up.
Ferrera talked about her life as the daughter of Honduran immigrants, saying: “Hillary has spent the last 30 years proving what she sees in us. Not our color, gender, or economic status, but our capacity to grow into thriving adults able to contribute great things to this country.”
And Dunham talked about how she had survived sexual assault, saying that: “22 years ago, Hillary declared that women’s rights are human rights. And she made it possible for my fellow sexual assault survivors in my home state of New York to have access to safe, immediate care in any emergency room.”
The pair finished by saying: “Donald’s not making America great again, he’s making America hate again.”
