Louis Theroux has tackled a plethora of controversial topics throughout his career, including brothels, neo-Nazis, Scientology, cults, aliens and paedophilia. He has also interviewed a number of famous faces, from Paul Daniels to Jimmy Savile.

Now the seasoned documentary-maker will delve into the dystopian nightmare that is President Donald Trump.

Since his rise to power, Trump has proven divisive to say the least. Days after his inauguration, he reinstated a global gag order that bans US-funded groups around the world from providing – or even talking to women about – safe abortions. He also signed a sweeping executive order that halts refugees from entering the country, as well as immigrants from seven “majority-Muslim countries,” including Syria, Somalia and Iran. And, most recently, he has announced his intention to roll back federal protections for transgender students.

It’s understandable, then, that almost everybody has an opinion on him.

In an attempt to gain a better understanding of who Trump really is, as well as his policies, Theroux will film a new three-part series.

Speaking to the Mirror about the project, he says: “It feels like a whole cultural, almost sea change in how the world is part of the post-Brexit wave of populism.

“The story seems to change every day with Trump. There’s something new bubbling under. It’s hard to get your head around such a big subject.”

Describing the “amazing challenge” he faces, Theroux continues: “The challenge with Trump would be... something so abhorrent that walks on two legs and is a human being, you have to explore where his foibles come from.

“Hopefully people will like it. It [will be] good.”

Theroux has form when it comes to approaching unlikeable topics. He famously met with the people of the Westboro Baptist Church (aka the “most hated family in America”), and, depsite challenging their opinions, earned their respect enough to engage them in thought-provoking debates and conversations.

Time will tell as to how he gets on with Trump.

The series is expected to air later this year on BBC2.
