Lucy Liu to play Watson

Published

As the latest TV incarnation of Sherlock showed, we just can't get enough of the detective in a deerstalker hat.

And now US network CBS is set to make their own thoroughly modern remake of the Sherlock Holmes story - with Lucy Liu as Watson.

Following in the footsteps of Martin Freeman in the BBC drama, Jude Law on film and other esteemed actors like Ben Kingsley and Dudley Moore, Lucy Lucy will star as Sherlock's sidekick in New-York set drama Elementary - apparently the first time that a woman has taken on the role.

Empire reports that the new show will imagine Sherlock (played by Johnny Lee Miller) as a British former addict, living in Brooklyn with his surgeon friend Joan Watson (who lost her medical licence after the death of a patient). Sherlock will work for NYPD instead of Scotland Yard.

So will the rather British detective drama translate Stateside? We'll have to wait and see until the pilot airs - although the BBC will be keeping a close eye on the show's progress to make sure it's not too faithful an homage to their own show. Sue Vertue, producer of Sherlock commented "We have been in touch with CBS and informed them that we will be looking at their finished pilot very closely for any infringement of our rights."

What do you think about the casting? Could any other actor play Sherlock after the brilliant Benedict Cumberbatch? Let us know by commenting below or @StylistMagazine.
