Meeting Uggie, star of The Artist

Published

Stylist has just been in the presence of a great actor, and one who despite his huge talent, has none of the diva-like characteristics of other A-listers. Yes, we’ve been with Uggie, canine star of The Artist.

Uggie plays main character George Valentin’s faithful friend and many critics have said he steals the movie. When we met him he was a little tired after a day spent meeting the press, but the consummate professional still put on a good show for his fans (prompted by some cocktail sausages.) The 10-year-old Jack Russell received the prestigious Palme Dog award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and there is an online campaign called 'Consider Uggie' to have his performance recognised during this year's awards season.

Uggie’s owner and trainer, Omar Von Muller, said as soon as he met the 10-year-old Jack Russell, he fell in love with him. The pup was destined for the pound as his original owners found him too much of a handful, but Omar managed to channel that energy and Uggie’s friendly temperament and turn him into the talented actor he is today. So what gives a dog star quality? Omar says “He’s not afraid of anything, even lights and anyone, including children, can pick him up and he won’t bite.”

It was an absolute pleasure meeting Uggie, the entire Stylist team was a little starstruck and yes, we did get his pawtograph...
