Warning: this article contains some pretty major spoilers for HBO’s Big Little Lies 2

It’s just been confirmed that Meryl Streep – as in, THE Meryl Streep – will be joining the powerhouse female cast of Big Little Lies for season two.

Oh yes, we’re deadly serious.

According to Deadline, Streep has signed on to play Mary Louise Wright, who is the mother of Alexander Skarsgard’s violent and abusive character, Perry.

She arrives in Monterey concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following Perry’s death in the season one finale. More importantly, though, she’s searching for answers – which, considering (spoiler alert) all five of the show’s leading ladies had a hand in Perry’s death, is sure to put their friendships and newfound loyalties to the test.

Announcing the news on Instagram, Reese Witherspoon wrote: “Beyond thrilled to have the one, the only, Meryl Streep joining the cast of #BLL for season 2.

“Get ready for more wine, secrets, and Big Little Lies. Monterey better watch out!!!”

It’s also worth noting that Skarsgard is expected to return in some capacity, too. Although conventional wisdom say Celeste (Nicole Kidman) is safe from her husband, and that he will only appear via flashback, Skarsgard recently hinted at some ambiguity surrounding his character’s fate.

Asked about his potential involvement in Season 2, the True Blood veteran hedged to “I don’t even know if I’m really dead or not.”

Hmm. That’s not how we remember it:

Meanwhile, Liane Moriarty – who wrote the book upon which the award-winning show is based – recently said that Big Little Lies 2 will focus on Kidman’s character and what her process of grief and (hopefully) healing looks like.

She explained to The Sydney Morning Herald: “That’s the question that’s also a really interesting thing, when you’ve been through a relationship like that, how do you feel now? How would she feel?

“She’s still grieving for the end of a terrible relationship and I think that would be a really interesting thing to explore. So there’s a whole lot of different storylines.”

We can’t wait to see how Streep – or, sorry, Mary – is going to play into all of this.
