What will the singer, 43, make of our existential questions?
What is the meaning of life?
I don’t know if there’s a sentence to explain it. There is a word though: love. It’s all about love.
What is the difference between right and wrong?
Yeah, you’re right – what is the f**king difference? [Laughs] It’s subjective. Sometimes we believe we’re doing the right thing when it’s the wrong thing.
Where is your happy place?
With my family. Also, the other night, I walked out on stage to 70,000 people. It was bliss. I thought I’d lost the spark for a long time, but that’s another happy place.
Nature or nurture?
I don’t think anything is set in stone. One of my friends has had some of the worst luck. Father left early, mother passed away early, a brother who took his own life. All of those things could have turned him into one kind of person but he didn’t let it happen. He is one of the greatest human beings. He took control.
Is it more important to be liked or respected?
It’s far more important to like or respect yourself. It’s not your business what other people think of you.
If you could be remembered for one thing what would it be?
How much I love my family. Everything else will go away. The music, the name, the fame. Won’t the music last? [Laughs] Maybe the Christmas music. Who or what is your greatest love? My children [Noah, Elias and Vida]. There’s no comparison. I felt the same love from my parents.
When did you last lie?
Just now, when I said my greatest love. God is number one. My faith is as deep as anyone’s could be.
Does the supernatural exist?
I don’t know. I would tell you, if I knew.
Are you fatalistic?
I try not to be.
What is your greatest fear?
That there is nothing [when we die]. People are so certain that there’s nothing. I’m not certain that there’s something but how are they so certain that there’s nothing?
Animals or babies?
I love baby animals. I love those sweet domesticated animals who just need love.
What talent do you yearn for?
I’d love to be taller. Is that a talent? I’m 5ft 10in but I’d like to be telling people I’m 6ft 5in and have Lego Batman abs.
Do you like to be complimented?
What are you thinking? Is it good? Is it about my hair? I love being complimented.
Do you have a high pain threshold?
I do not. I’ve seen two child births and I could not have more respect and admiration for women. Forget about labour, I would be done by period cramps.
What book do you recommend most to others?
The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It’s about not letting your ego control your life. There’s a separate part of you – a soul, a spirit – that’s listening to the ego and can prevent those negative thoughts from taking over your life.
Which lesson has been the hardest to learn?
What’s really important in life. It’s learned by hard lessons, experience, heartbreak, success, failure. Today’s curse is tomorrow’s blessing.
What food sums up happiness?
My grandmother’s risotto. I had salad today. F**k salad. I want a nice risotto, cubes of beef in a red sauce and parmesan cheese.
What have you never understood?
War. No one has the right to be violent to another human being.
What is the one thing you want to know before you die?
Why are we, how are we, where did it begin? What came before the Big Bang?
Are you scared of dying or what happens when you die?
I’m not scared of the action [of dying]. I hope that we are all connected spiritually in some way we are not supposed to understand.
Quinoa or Quavers? What’s a Quaver, is it like a Cheeto?
Oh, f**k yeah. Cheetos – yes; quinoa – my ass. I don’t actually think it’s that good for you.
