Mindy Kaling – actor, comedian, screenwriter, producer, essayist and director – is also pregnant. Oprah Winfrey announced in July that Kaling was expecting a baby, and The Mindy Project star confirmed the news herself in August.

Now, one of Kaling’s castmates has revealed how she shared the news of her baby’s sex with them – and how things got pretty emotional in rehearsals as a result.

Ed Weeks plays Dr Jeremy Reed on The Mindy Project, the sixth and final series of which is set to premiere on 12 September. Speaking to HelloGiggles, Weeks said that The Mindy Project cast learned about Kaling’s pregnancy shortly before it became public knowledge.

“She kind of took us aside on set, weirdly in the open-office area where we film most of our scenes,” Weeks said.

“She said, ‘Guys, I want you to know, I’m pregnant. I haven’t told anybody.’ And then I think later that day, it broke… It broke and nobody knew how it had got out.”

Kaling also told the cast the sex of her baby – via a beautiful reflection on the symbolic timing of her pregnancy and its connection to The Mindy Project.

“The show started as a tribute to [Kaling’s] mother, who very sadly passed away just as the show was being picked up.” Weeks explained.

However, The Mindy Project will end “with her having a daughter of her own,” he continued.

“When she reminded us all of that, we all cried at the final table read.”

Kaling’s mother has obviously – and very understandably – been on her mind during her pregnancy. Swati Chokalingam was an obstetrician and gynaecologist who died of pancreatic cancer in September 2012, seven months before the first season of The Mindy Project aired. Kaling said in August that she hoped to inherit some of her mother’s parenting style.

“My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us, just loved us and really wanted us to be happy no matter what we did,” Kaling told host Willie Geist during an appearance on NBC’s Sunday Today programme.

“My career choice was not something that she was familiar with and she was just so supportive of that. And if I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I'd be so happy.”

The first season of The Mindy Project aired seven months after Mindy Kaling's mother died of cancer.

Kaling has also said that while she doesn’t feel like she needs a husband to create a family of her own, she was always in awe of her parents’ long marriage.

“When I was younger, I wanted so badly to be married and have kids in a rush,” she told Good Housekeeping in 2015. “I loved my parents’ relationship. The way my father was with my mother when she was dying was so moving. It was such devotion.”

Ultimately, however, she’s happy to strike out alone. “I don't need anyone to take care of all my needs and desires. I can take care of them myself now.”
