Model arrested for stealing pop tarts and cake

A catwalk model has been arrested in New York for shoplifting pop tarts and cake mix from a supermarket.

Mary Jean Conniff appeared in court in Manhatten yesterday, charged with stealing the sugary treats.

The prosecution said that a security guard "observed the defendant remove one cake, three boxes of Pop-Tarts, two boxes of cake mix and several other items from a shelf and conceal the items inside the defendant's purse and pockets."

The six-foot tall model is described as "rake-thin" by the Daily Mail, and workers at the Harlem store she is accused of stealing from said they felt sorry for her.

"I don’t want to judge her, but maybe she needed it," said one employee. "Maybe she was hungry and had a sweet tooth."

She was charged to one day's community service, and her petit larcenary charge would be reduced to a violation if she keeps a clean record for six months.

Her lawyer Thomas Kenniff called the case a misunderstanding, telling the New York Post that “there was no finding of guilt against my client. There’s no reason to think this was anything more than a misunderstanding. She will go on to live a law-abiding life as she has always done."

Conniff was last seen on the catwalk in 2012 at Argentinian designer Victor De Souza's autumn show, but is not reported to have picked up much modelling work since. Perhaps in that time she lost her taste for backstage treats such as coconut water and popcorn, and gained a sweet tooth.

Of course, she might be better suited to shopping at the Chanel Supermarket, seen in the autumn/winter show at Paris Fashion Week this February. After the show Cara Delevingne and co took their pick of items from the chic shelves. Happy days...
