If you have ever seen a movie before, you’ll know that any character who dons a pair of glasses is unlikely to be rarely portrayed as confident or desirable. In fact, spectacles are typically reserved for the “geeky” sidekick – or, y’know, for the female characters who have yet to undergo their rom-com makeover.

Think about it: Anne Hathaway only wears her specs at the beginning of the Princess Diaries, Sandra Bullock during her “unattractive” stage of Miss Congeniality and Ally Sheedy before she gets “cute” in The Breakfast Club. For as long as we can remember, we’ve been told that we have to whip off our glasses to look good – and that we should always opt for contact lenses when attending a glitzy event (case in point: how many brides have you seen wear glasses on their big day?).

Thankfully, though, more and more people are starting to come around to the idea that glasses aren’t just functional (we need them to see), but they can also look amazing, too.

And, at the 2018 Oscars, Lupita Nyong’o, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep and Rita Moreno decided to smash fashion taboos by donning their specs for the glitziest event in Hollywood.
