Pippa Middleton first came under the spotlight when she took on the role of maid of honour at her sister the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding to Prince William in 2011.

And now it seems as if the world’s most iconic bridesmaid is set to become a bride herself.

According to multiple sources, the 32-year-old magazine columnist and events planner is engaged to her boyfriend James Matthews, after he got down on one knee during a romantic weekend in the Lake District.

Pippa was “completely and totally surprised”, they told the Mail Online.

The couple first began dating in 2012, but split soon afterwards.

Their paths crossed again several years later and they rekindled their relationship in 2015.

Neither Pippa nor James, who manages a hedge fund (not to mention being the big brother of Made In Chelsea’s Spencer Matthews), have commented on the engagement.

When the wedding does go ahead, there's a chance that the Duchess Catherine will don a bridesmaid dress and return the favour of appearing as maid of honour for her sister’s big day.

After all, Pippa did previously say that her relationship with her sister has not and will not change – despite Kate’s royal connections.

She previously told TODAY’s Matt Lauer: “I mean, obviously she has pressures that she's taken on and things. But we spend a lot of time together. We still do a lot together as a family.

“We have a very normal, sisterly relationship. We’re very close. And, you know, we support each other and get each other's opinions and things.”

If Kate did step up as bridesmaid, she could even try wearing the very same dress that Pippa wore to her own wedding day.

Because, yes, Pippa has it safely stowed away in her closet.

“It’s actually still in my wardrobe at home,” she said. “I haven't worn it since. But I think I'll just keep it there...

“I think it's the sort of thing that I'm sure I'll bring out if someone wanted to see it or my children one day want to see it. Then I'll show them."
