Prince Charles will walk Meghan Markle down the aisle on Saturday when she marries Prince Harry, Kensington Palace has confirmed.
“I hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health,” she said, referring to recent reports that he had suffered a heart attack.
Now, it has been revealed that Prince Charles will be walking her down the aisle in Thomas Markle’s stead.
“Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St George’s Chapel on her Wedding Day,” reads a statement from the palace.
The spokesperson who drafted the statement added a line in to explain that this decision had been made to show the union between Meghan and Harry’s families.
“The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms Markle to the Royal Family in this way,” they said.
However, while Charles will be accompanying Meghan down the aisle, it has since been confirmed that the self-declared feminist will not have anyone “give her away”.
In fact, according to The Telegraph, the Prince of Wales will accompany the Suits star down just one half of the aisle at St George’s Chapel. Meghan will walk alone and independently for the other half.
Addressing this decision, Hugo Vickers, royal biographer, said: “It’s her wedding and I think she should be able to do whatever she likes.
“It’s meant to be a happy occasion and that’s what it’s all about.”
While Meghan’s father will not be attending, her mother and “best friend”, Doria Ragland, will be playing an important role in the Suits star’s wedding.
Ragland is already in the UK, which has allowed time for Prince Harry’s family, including The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to spend time with her before the wedding itself.
And, in a break with tradition, Kensington Palace has confirmed that Ragland will be riding in a car with her daughter from her overnight accommodation to Windsor Castle.
It is hoped that this will allow Meghan the chance to share a few special, private moments with Ragland – whom she has proudly described as the most important woman in her life.
Of course, some have expressed disappointment that Ragland was not chosen to walk her daughter down the aisle, especially as Thomas Markle reportedly gave his ex-wife his blessing to perform the duty.
However, his absence has left many holes in the schedule, and it remains unknown who will give a speech about Meghan at the evening dinner. It is thought that this role may fall to Ragland, whom Harry previously described as “amazing” during an interview with the BBC.
In the same interview (see the video above), Meghan revealed that she and Harry have spent a lot of time with her mother.
Speaking about her family’s reaction to their relationship, she said: “I’m sure the onset, both my parents and my close friends were concerned, because we got very quickly swept up in a media storm that, as I shared, was not part of my life before that, but they also had never seen me so happy. And I think also once my friends were able to really meet Harry, and my mum, who we’ve spent a lot of time with, who is so much fun…”
“Her mum’s amazing,” interrupted Harry.
