Let’s celebrate the women making a difference at Stylist’s Remarkable Women Awards
In March 2019, Stylist is set to celebrate the trailblazing women of the moment with our inaugural Remarkable Women Awards, in partnership with philosophy.
Our gala event will celebrate women from all walks of life, and we need your help to do this. We want to shed a light on the women making a meaningful difference to their communities and want your nominations for our Inspiration of the Year award. We’re looking for Britain’s most extraordinary unsung heroes who have gone above and beyond to change the lives of women in their community. Perhaps a friend, family member or co-worker springs to mind: someone who’s instigating real change in her world.
Perhaps the hardest task will be choosing who to nominate. For example, how did you feel when Gina Martin, the 27-year-old activist behind the anti-upskirting campaign, came blazing into public consciousness, demanding the act to be legally defined as a sexual offence? She put her case forward on TV, social media and in parliament, and at Stylist, we were pretty damn impressed. What about Kate Clanchy, the secondary school teacher who shares her pupils’ poetry on family, loneliness and identity on Twitter, and in doing so is improving understanding of the experiences of immigrant children? Or maybe Sharmaine Lovegrove, the publisher behind Dialogue Books, an imprint ensuring that the books we read represent the diverse world we actually live in by pushing stories written by minority groups? And they’re just the women we know about.
Your hero may be someone campaigning to end period poverty, fighting everyday sexism, or doing extraordinary work in a male dominated field. The possibilities are infinite. So, ask yourself this: who are you thankful for? Who drives you to do better? Who inspires, uplifts and excites you? Who do you want to honour? This is an award for the everyday heroes and activists we don’t hear about enough.
Stylist editors will deliberate over your suggestions and at least three lucky nominees will make the shortlist for Inspiration of the Year. All women shortlisted will travel to London to take part in a photoshoot and interview in January, which will appear in a future issue of the magazine. Once the shortlist is revealed, voting opens to the public. That’s right, not only do you get to nominate the inspirational women you know for this award, you also get to vote for who wins.
On Tuesday 5 March, in the same week as International Women’s Day, the shortlisted nominees will be whisked to our Remarkable Women Awards ceremony at Rosewood London, and the lucky winner who has garnered the most votes will walk away with the coveted Inspiration of the Year accolade, in partnership with philosophy. The closing date for entries is 13 January, so get nominating. We can’t wait to read all about her.
