Why take life seriously when you can respond with a little humour? That’s the motto of Ryan Reynolds, in addressing recent divorce rumours…

Any Hollywood couple in the limelight will face rumours of their demise at one point or another - regardless of whether there’s any truth to that speculation.

And Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are no exception. But the Deadpool star shut down divorce gossip in the best way possible recently, in a glib aside on Twitter.

Reynolds, who has form for his pithy comebacks, tweeted a link to an article that suggested he and his wife Lively were “heading for a divorce” as they struggled “to spend quality time together”.

Proving that he can rise above the tabloid nonsense, Reynolds simply quipped: “I wish. I could use a little more ‘me time.’”

Reynolds and Lively, who tied the knot six years ago, are more than happy to make fun of each other and their marriage on social media.

Both have posted birthday messages in the past that conspicuously channel snark over schmaltz.

Reynolds cropped his wife out of his birthday greeting to her, while Lively responded by posting a picture of “rival” Ryan Gosling in the place of her husband.

However, the couple - who have two children together - are also willing to get real about their relationship, and they don’t shy away from questions about what makes them tick.

“We were friends for two years before we were ever dating,” Lively said, in an interview last year, on the dynamics of her marriage with Reynolds. “And I treat him like my girlfriend… He does the same for me. He treats me like his best buddy.”

Beyond the ribbing, Reynolds too, has a lot of sweet things to say about his wife.

“She meets hate with empathy,” he said recently. “She’ll take the time to imagine what happened to a person when they were five or six years old. And she’s made me a more empathetic person.”

Stirring stuff - but we do love the light touch, too.
