Actress Saoirse Ronan has revealed that Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird is the only film out of everything she’s starred in that she can actually watch.

Saoirse Ronan has an impressive back catalogue of films in which she’s starred – from the critically-acclaimed Atonement to the utterly heart-warming Brooklyn – but there’s only one that she can “watch and actually enjoy”. Of course, it’s the film that everyone mother and daughter across the globe are currently talking about: Lady Bird.

“I think when I watched her I related to her more, which was interesting,” Ronan told the Standard, referring to the character she plays, Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson.

“I think I was so right in the middle of all of it when it was being shot. It’s the only film I’ve been in that I can watch and actually enjoy.”

The film, a directorial debut from indie writer-director Greta Gerwig, delves into the often complex and volatile relationship between mothers and daughters. Following the life of Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson, who’s in her final year at a Catholic high school in Sacramento in California, the 93-minute movie taps into the core of coming-of-age and female relationships in a very raw, emotional way.

Which is maybe why Ronan can watch it without feeling anxious.

“I’m usually really anxious watching anything that I’m in, I really don’t enjoy it but I don’t know why I was able to watch this and go ‘Oh, Lady Bird is her own person’,” Ronan explains.

As the film has started to make its way into cinemas across the world, people have taken to Twitter to show their appreciation for it.

“This is storytelling at its finest. The writing is hilarious, moving, charming, and heartfelt. BEAUTIFULLY shot and edited. It’s just so honest and raw. Doesn’t miss a beat. Also Saoirse Ronan is my new favorite actress,” one user wrote.

“I loved Lady Bird the first time I watched it. And the second time. But watching it with my teenage daughter took it to the next level,” another user posted.

Lady Bird will hit cinemas across the UK on Friday 23 March.
