Serena Williams explains why her dad didn’t walk her down the aisle

There are some things more important than adhering to “tradition” at a wedding. Just ask Serena Williams…

Meghan Markle recently issued a statement through Kensington Palace, confirming that her father will not be attending her wedding to Prince Harry.

“I hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health,” she said, referring to recent reports that he had suffered a heart attack.

While this has caused many people to speculate who will be walking the Suits actor down the aisle, one of her closest friends, Serena Williams, has reminded us all that there are always more important things to consider than “tradition” when it comes to a wedding.

In her new documentary, Being Serena, the tennis champion revealed that her father, Richard Williams, was forced to pull out of walking his daughter down the aisle at her wedding.

“He was in New Orleans, he had a suit, and I know he was really excited,” Williams said in the documentary, according to Vogue.

“But then he wrote me and said, ‘Serena, I don’t want you to be mad at me, but I just can’t walk you down the aisle. I’m not myself anymore. I’m just too nervous’.”

Knowing the “struggles” her father has faced in recent years, Williams did not lose her temper at the last minute alteration. Instead, she remained calm and was supportive of her father’s wishes.

“Daddy, it’s OK, if you don’t want to come to the wedding at all, that’s okay too,” she said, when asked how she replied to his message.

“I’m not going to be upset with you about it, so I don’t want you to be upset about it.”

Williams added: ”If he doesn’t want to be up there in front of a lot of people, I completely understand. Look, when we first came on the scene, there were a lot of people who didn’t get him. I don’t think a lot of them wanted to get him. I don’t think a lot of him could have anyway. Our family knows what we have.

“We just want each other to be happy. That’s what matters. I don’t think anything could ever change that.”

While Williams has yet to confirm whether or not she will be attending Markle’s wedding (she recently said she would have to “see if I can make it”), she has offered the bride-to-be some advice.

“I just think it’s so important to [be fully present and] enjoy the moment,” said Williams, reflecting on her own wedding to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

Almost as an after-thought, the tennis ace added: “And eat the cake! I didn’t get to eat mine at the wedding, because we were just having so much fun!”
