Just when we thought Serena Williams couldn’t get any better….

Serena Williams has as a bevy of awards, historic feats and accomplishments to her name. It’s hardly surprising, then, that she knows a thing or two about what real personal success looks like.

After a year of ups and downs, the GOAT just secured her place into a ninth Grand Slam final. If she wins, she’ll be on par with the all-time record set by Margaret Court.

However, for Williams her true victory lies in still being alive.

“It’s honestly really incredible,” she said in her on court interview after beating Anastasija Sevastova 6-3 6-0.

“A year ago I was fighting, literally for my life in the hospital after I had the baby.

Williams experienced a multitude of complications after giving birth to her first child, Olympia, 12 months ago.

“Every day I step out on this court, I’m so grateful that I have an opportunity to play this sport.

“No matter what happens in any match, semis, finals… I feel like I’ve already won.”

That’s right, Williams may have made the final (again) but she’s already won because she’s alive, healthy and still playing tennis.

She added in her post-match press conference: “I got a little emotional out there [in the on court interview] because last year I was literally fighting for my life in the hospital.

“I think I was on my fourth surgery by now. What is today? I was on my third surgery. I had one more to go still.

“To come from that, in the hospital bed, not being able to move and walk and do anything, now only a year later, I’m not training, but I’m actually in these finals, in two in a row. Like I said, this is the beginning. I’m not there yet. I’m on the climb still.

“I just feel like not only is my future bright, even though I’m not a spring chicken, but I still have a very, very bright future. That is super exciting for me.”
