More than ten years after she sashayed off our TV screens in a happy blur with her girls and Mr Big (or "John"), Sarah Jessica Parker is back with a new HBO series based in the Big Apple.

The 50-year-old actress has signed on to Divorce, a comedy written by Irish writer-actress Sharon Horgan, Deadline reports

Filmed in New York, the series will tell the story of Frances (Parker), "a woman who suddenly begins to reassess her life and her marriage, and finds that making a clean break and a fresh start is harder than she thought".

Gone are the swarthy charms of Mr Big (Chris Noth) and in his place, Sideways actor Thomas Haden Church will play SJP's fictional husband, Robert - the one she spends the series moving on from:

And instead of Samantha et al., Molly Shannon and Talia Balsam will appear as the pals of SJP's character Frances.

Shannon will play Diane, Frances’ high-strung friend (the new Charlotte?), while Balsam will take on the role of Dallas, a close, calm friend.

Vanity Fair speculates that the new comedy will be a little darker and less frivolous than Sex And The City - think more Girls than Veep (two other recent HBO wins).

So out go the Cosmos and Manolo Blahniks and in their place, something a little more sedate and thoughtful. We still expect a lot of stylish lunches, though.

Here in the UK, Divorce writer Horgan created and starred in series Pulling, Bad ManagementDead Boss and most recently, Amazon comedy series Catastrophe.

Divorce is her first American series and will begin shooting in New York next year.
