“My era of Hollywood was much better” Why Sophia Loren isn’t a fan of celebrities on social media

“Sex appeal is 50 percent what you've got and 50 percent what people think you've got.”

It might be a sentiment that seems made for lovers of Instagram filters, but the woman behind the famous quote doesn't sound much like a fan of social media.

Sophia Loren, whose career began at the age of 14 in 1949, spoke at the National Art Awards in New York and sounded distinctly unimpressed with today's celebrity culture.

“In my time, an actress’ merit and skill was based on her talent. Now when people meet me, they pull out their phones to take pictures,” she told Page Six. “I do not know much about social media, but it seems that that’s what makes people more famous. My era of Hollywood was much better – you were known for your skill and talent.”

“I was very lucky to be a part of that time,” she added.

However Loren, 81, also spoke on the red carpet of the need to embrace new things, which we'd like to think means we might see the Italian screen star dispensing her famous pearls of wisdom online one day.

“I think you have to get accustomed to the new things that come out and try to run after them and try to be always living in a world that belongs to you,” reports Associated Press. “Even though you have to learn many things more.”

And as well as insisting that she would never retire – “that's terrible, the word retire. Never,” – Loren had some advice for young actors: “To take life seriously, to do the right things and not to take life easily.”

A shareable, motivational Instagram post if ever we saw one.
