Sophie Turner appeared on The Graham Norton Show

Sophie Turner and Taylor Swift hugged each other on The Graham Norton Show, and people seem to be surprised by the normal, professional interaction – just because they’ve both dated Joe Jonas…

Graham Norton’s red couch was dominated by female talent on Friday night (25 May), with Sophie Turner, Jessica Chastain and Taylor Swift joining the host to promote their new works.

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy were also there as part of the X-Men: Dark Phoenix cast.

But it was a perfectly normal interaction between Turner and Swift that hit headlines and really got people talking.

Describing their friendly hug as “awkward”, some fans and news sites just couldn’t believe that the pair got on. But why?

To quickly recap: Swift and Joe Jonas briefly dated in 2008 when she was 18. The singer later revealed to Ellen DeGeneres that Jonas had broken up with her in a 27-second phone call. However, just last week, Swift told DeGeneres that “burning” her ex during that interview was one of her biggest regrets. “That was too much,” she laughed. “I was 18, yeah. We laugh about it now, but that was mouthy, yeah, some teenage stuff there.”

Over a decade later, Jonas went on to marry Game of Thrones star Turner in a surprise LA ceremony just last month. Swift is also in a long-term relationship with actor Joe Alwyn.

We can conclude that everyone involved is very much over the short-lived teenage romance.

The Graham Norton Show is the only time Turner and Swift have made an appearance together, and – just like all the other guests – they hugged each other after Swift’s performance of her new single ME!.

Cue: multiple press headlines and tweets that reduced two successful, talented, smart women to being “the ex-girlfriend” and “the wife” coming “face-to-face”. Some also couldn’t deal with the fact that Turner and Swift had fringes. Yes, two women have the same hair style - shocker!

“Bit awkward having Sophie Turner and Taylor Swift on the same show when Sophie just got married to Joe Jonas,” tweeted one viewer. “And Sophie got her hair done pretty similar to Taylor’s.”

“Gonna watch Graham Norton just on the off chance there’s a bitch fight between Sophie Turner and Taylor Swift,” added another charming character.

“That very awkward moment Sophie turner has to listen to Taylor Swift sing ‘you’ll never find another like me’ her face was epic!” wrote a third. “DON’T WORRY SOPHIE YOU ARE DEF A WIN GIRL!”

But there was also a lot of support from fans who refused to feed into this insulting, yet unsurprising, narrative.

One fan tweeted: “Media: Sophie Turner’s awkward encounter with his bf’s ex! Sophie Turner confronts Taylor Swift”. She then shared a video of the hug along with the caption: “Reality.”

And another pointed out:

“Taylor Swift:

- friends with Joe Jonas

- admits her public reaction to their breakup was uncalled for

- laughs about it with Joe, now

- is a fan of Sophie Turner’s work on GoT

- squeals and hugs Sophie on Graham Norton’s show

And… there’s “beef” between the three of them??”

A third added:

“Media: I wonder how Joe Jonas felt about Sophie Turner and Taylor Swift’s interview, Sophie Turner comes face to face with Joe Jonas’ ex, Taylor Swift.

Reality:

Taylor: Hey Buddy!

Sophie: screaming/fangirling”

But, ultimately, the story here shouldn’t be about the interaction at all. Both women were there, alongside three other stars, to promote their work and have an enjoyable interview.

Perhaps the frustrating truth is that the coverage it received was inevitable.
