Daniels, real name Stephanie Clifford, had allegedly been getting ready to speak publicly about Trump in recent weeks. However, it has now emerged that Trump’s longtime personal lawyer, Michael D Cohen, secretly obtained a temporary restraining order to stop her disclosing information about their alleged relationship.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed on Thursday 8 March that a restraining order had been issued by an arbitrator in California, barring Clifford from sharing “confidential information” about her alleged affair with the president.

“This case has already been won in arbitration and anything beyond that, I would refer you to the president’s outside counsel,” Huckabee Sanders said, according to the BBC.

Clifford claims that she had a consensual sexual relationship with Trump in 2006, shortly after his third wife Melania gave birth to their first and only child, Barron. Cohen admitted in February that he paid Clifford $130,000 shortly before the 2016 presidential election, in exchange for her signing a “hush agreement” in which she promised to deny the alleged affair.

However, Clifford recently filed a civil lawsuit against Trump, alleging that the non-disclosure agreement was “legally null and void and of no consequence” because Trump did not sign it himself.

Lawrence S Rosen, a lawyer representing Cohen, told the New York Times that Clifford had been barred from filing her lawsuit and making other disclosures of confidential information. However, Michael Avenatti, Clifford’s lawyer, said that he does not consider the restraining order valid.

He added that he has advised Clifford to proceed with her lawsuit in open court. When asked if Clifford would drop her court case if Cohen paid her more money, Avenatti said she would not.

“At this point, we are well beyond that — this is a search for the truth,” he said.
