This dad banned his daughter from waxing her thighs for the best reason

Many women, although by no means all of them, have a favourite anecdote about their father. It might be a story that illustrates his silly sense of humour, a tale that highlights his kindness, or a memory of how hard he worked to support his family.

But even the most dedicated dad has a limit of what he’s prepared to do for his daughter – and so one woman was stunned to find out just how far her father had gone to look out for her teenage self.

The woman, known only as carlinha1289, recently shared the story of her discovery on Reddit. She says that when she was a teenager, her mum wasn’t particularly interested in doing things together. As a result, carlinha1289 had no go-to person to guide her through traditionally female rites of passage such as “manicures, waxing, bra shopping and whatnot”.

“However, I had a great dad who was always willing to bring me to those things,” she says, “so I never felt like I missed out.”

So far, so devoted. But when carlinha1289 was 16, she told her father that she wanted to wax her legs. At first, he said no, but relented once she told him that prom was coming up.

“As usual, he held his word and a few days later, I had an appointment with the sweetest waxer I’ll probably ever meet,” she says. “My dad had ONE condition: no upper legs.”

The waxing went without a hitch, and carlinha1289 continued visiting the same beauty therapist for some time before eventually moving away from the area. Over a decade later, she returned to her hometown and booked an appointment with the same woman – who finally revealed something incredible about carlinha1289’s first visit.

“She told me that before my first appointment, my dad had called her and booked an appointment for himself,” she says.

After speaking to the therapist about her techniques, carlinha1289’s father secretly requested a full leg wax. Once his legs were silky smooth, he told the waxer that “he didn’t really enjoy any of it, but that his 16-year-old daughter wanted to [get] her legs waxed and that he wanted to try it first.”

He proceeded to book an appointment for carlinha1289 – but the following day, called the salon to tell the waxer that “he had bruising on his upper legs and that it hurt”. She explained that it was relatively common for thighs to be a little bruised immediately after hair removal, leading carlinha1289’s father to insist that she only get a half-leg wax.

When she left the salon having heard the story for the first time, carlinha1289 called her father to tell him what the beauty therapist had said.

“All he could say was, ‘At least you don’t have a chest to wax’,” she says. “‘I don’t think I could have handled that one.’”

“The thing is, this is exactly like my dad,” carlinha1289 reflects. “It’s something he would do and... never ever tell me he did. It was just another reminder of how thoughtful he is and always was.”
