Actress Thandie Newton has claimed she was ‘groped’ and propositioned by a male co-star, and warned about widespread sexual abuse across ‘every single industry.’

Newton, 43, made the comments in an interview with the Press Association, saying that the incident happened after the birth of her first child:

“I’ve literally been in situations where a co-actor has groped me and tried to engage me and I’m like, 'What the hell, I’ve got one kid and a husband – what are you doing?'

“If I’d been an 18-year-old girl, desperate, I’m not sure. And attracted to him, let’s say. That could have turned into a situation.”

The Crash star also said that another time, a producer asked her to appear topless in a scene to increase ratings, saying:

“Thandie. Kid. Think about it – Thandie Newton, top off, ratings.”

Although Newton didn’t reveal who groped her, or which producer made the topless comments, she says that this kind of behaviour isn’t limited to the film industry:

“It’s a widespread problem in every single industry, in every single place.”

The Bafta-winner said she began speaking about sexual abuse years ago, hoping to protect younger women from the same experiences she has had, but was advised against speaking out:

“I had a publicist who said, 'It's really not good for you to be associated with this kind of conversation because it's kind of a bum out. People associate you with a bum out'.”

But the star says she will continue speaking out, and will be using her acting career to  fund her work in human rights activism.

The news comes not long after the Bafta-winner told W magazine of how a director filmed up her skirt during an audition early in her career – and then showed the footage to his friends.

“A director, on a call back, had a camera shooting up my skirt and asked me to touch my t*ts and think about the guy making love to me in the scene,” she told W.

Many years later, Newton discovered that:

“It turns out that the director was showing that audition tape to his friends after poker games at his house. And they would all get off on it.”
