Published

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have finally announced the name of their new baby girl - Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to the baby girl on May 2, the second child for her and her husband Prince William.

The new princess was born at 8.34am, weighing 8 pounds and 3 ounces and Prince William was present for the birth.

Kensington Palace announced the happy arrival in a tweet. A bulletin on an ornate golden easel has since been placed in front of Buckingham Palace to officially confirm the birth, and the birth certificate has just been released (see below).

After Kate gave birth, Prince William brought along their son George to meet his new sister. George, rather sweetly, waved at the cameras while being held on the hip of his dad.

An official statement from Kensington Palace read:

"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."

The little girl is now fourth in line to the throne, after her brother George, who is third, her father who is second and her granddad who is first after the Queen.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 33, gave birth at the Lindo wing at St Mary's hospital, the same place that she gave birth to her first child George. She was even given a 10% discount for her loyalty to the hospital.

The royal couple can expect to pay £5,913 now, instead of  £6,570, which is the normal price of a two-room suite costs for an overnight stay with a “normal delivery”.

Before the birth, there was uncertainty over the date of the delivery, but notices had been erected outside the hospital, marking the 15-30 April out of bounds 24 hours-a-day for an undisclosed “special event”.
