When Donald Trump came for Debra Messing on Twitter, the Will & Grace star had no choice but to bestow some home truths, in the straight-talking style we all know and love.
To the golden era of TV, and the stars of our favourite 90s shows that will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Take Nickelodeon stalwart Melissa Joan Hart for being the turn-of-the-millennium teenage witch we all wanted to be. Or Sarah Michelle Gellar, for her epic vampire-slaying skills. And, of course, the entire cast of Friends.
Debra Messing, however, is one actress that tops both the list of pure nostalgia and current popularity, for very good reason. After all, when you’ve got a razor-sharp sense of humour, strong political viewpoints and a fierce red mane to match, what more could you expect?
So, it was an extremely ill-advised move for Donald Trump to decide to come for the TV icon at the weekend. But nevertheless, it gifted us a spectacular Twitter takedown.
The row kicked off when the Will & Grace star called for The Hollywood Reporter to share the list of attendees at an upcoming Trump fundraiser in Beverly Hills, which coincides during the week of the 2019 Emmy Awards. “Please print a list of all attendees please. The public has a right to know,” she tweeted on Friday.
Trump, who remains on standby to spark a Twitter storm whenever he catches so much as a whiff of celebrity criticism, clearly felt touchy that Messing had drawn attention to his Hollywood appearance. So, when a Fox & Friends segment aired her anti-Trump tweets on Sunday morning, he got personal.
“I have not forgotten that when it was announced that I was going to do The Apprentice, and when it then became a big hit, helping NBC’s failed lineup greatly, @DebraMessing came up to me at an Upfront & profusely thanked me, even calling me “Sir.” How times have changed!,” he tweeted.
Before 2016 happened, you might well assume that the President of the United States would have more pressing social issues to occupy his time than tweeting about his reality TV series. Matters of profound national importance, such as devastating gun violence and the reality of climate change, which is currently making itself known in the form of a Category 5 hurricane approaching the Atlantic coast of the US. Come to think about it, why is the POTUS even using Twitter as a means of formal communication? Alas, these are the strange times we’re living in.
Messing wasn’t messing though, and the progressive actress proceeded to roast Trump for his apathy and inaction following the latest mass shooting in Odessa, Texas, responding with a list of of mass shootings that have taken place in the United States.
“Now that I know I have your attention @realDonaldTrump, please read this thread - a PARTIAL list of souls lost to preventable, devastating gun violence,” Messing wrote. “America wants universal background checks. The majority of Americans want assault weapons ban. Take Action and I’ll call you Sir.”
Ah, toxic masculinity. If we lived according to the gospel of Donald Trump, sharing a primetime network once upon a time means you should be best friends forever. But back in the real world, if Trump can be president, surely Debra Messing can too? After all, she’s the one with an Emmy for her screen time on Will & Grace.
