When Taylor Swift shared a picture of her group of girlfriends on American Independence Day last year, our hearts did a little somersault.

There, on one cosy sofa sat Lena Dunham, Emma Stone, Jaime King, Jessica Szohr and more.

From 50 cent and Meryl Streep (yes, really) to Blake Lively and Florence Welch, we've pulled together a photo album of heartwarming (and slightly envy-inducing) unexpected friendships in Hollywood.

  • Taylor Swift and Blake Lively

We all know Taylor Swift's close circle of friends include actresses, musicians and models, but never has she been spotted hanging out with Blake Lively until now.

The two had a fun day out in Australia, feeding animals and cuddling koala bears. "Selfie game was strong ...until I got photobombed by some crazy fan," wrote Lively alongside this picture. The actress is currently filming The Shallows down under while Swift is continuing her world tour in the country.

  • Adele, Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone

Last month, Adele, Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence gave us new squad goals when they were pictured in New York on a Monday night. The unlikely group nipped out to eat dinner at Cosme, a Mexican restaurant.

  • Gwen, Gwyneth, Nicole, Chelsea, Naomi, Sam and Stella

(From left to right) Nicole Richie, Chelsea Handler, Naomi Watts, Stella McCartney, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Taylor-Johnson and Gwen Stefani came out to celebrate McCartney's birthday at a vegan restaurant called Crossroads in April 2014. "Gals night out!," wrote the designer alongside this group selfie.

  • Ed Sheeran and Courteney Cox

The pair's unforeseen friendship came to life when Sheeran started living in Cox's LA beach house. Late last year the British singer wrote on Instagram: "My friend Courteney is nominated for a People Choice Award for favourite cable tv actress. She's never won one before and she lets me live in her beach house, so how's about we all vote for her and win her the damn thang eh? Safe".

  • Ed Sheeran and Jennifer Aniston

Thereafter, Sheeran was introduced to Cox's Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston. It seemed Sheeran spent Thanksgiving 2013 with the actress and her close friends after Aniston's manager, Aleen Keshishian, posted a picture of the three of them with the caption: "#happythanksgiving #jenniferaniston @aleenkeshishian #edsheeran"

  • Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Watson

Jennifer Lawrence has a new partner-in-crime in the form of Harry Potter star Emma Watson. The two actresses were spotted fooling around together at Dior’s Haute Couture show in Paris last night, where Lawrence brought the tone down by face-palming her fellow Hollywood A-lister.

  • Blake Lively and Florence Welch

"She's been a really big support when I'm in that big, crazy Met Ball scene - having Blake there to be a partner in crime has been really lovely," said Welch on the Gossip Girl star. The pair are always spotted laughing together behind the scenes at red carpet events and Welch reportedly sang at Lively's wedding to actor Ryan Reynolds in September 2012.

  • Meryl Streep and 50 Cent

We had no idea Meryl Streep and 50 Cent had a budding friendship until the rapper shared photos of himself with the Oscar winner at an NBA game. Not only were the two getting along courtside, they also struck a "little gangsta" pose for the camera when they ran into Lakers player Kobe Bryant.

  • Katy Perry and Hillary Clinton

Perry offered to write Clinton a campaign song on alongside an image of her with the potential 2016 presidential candidate at a book signing. Clinton responded writing, "Well that’s not a Hard Choice. You already did! Keep letting us hear you Roar". Words of encouragement is the backbone of any good friendship.

The fashion designer has known Depp since she was a student at Central Saint Martins. During her graduate degree show, Depp and Moss (who walked in the show) stayed in the basement of the fashion designer's London home. • Lena Dunham and Mindy Kaling

They're both writers and actresses of their own hit TV shows so it's not all that surprising they're best of friends. But nonetheless, it was an unexpected delight to find Dunham chilling out and watching TV on Kaling's sofa.
