Anyone previously in the dark likely now fully understands 'ghosting', thanks to widespread rumours that it’s how Charlize Theron and Sean Penn’s relationship came to an end. According to the stories, she simply stopped calling, answering and replying. Total cut-off.

Only, despite making the cold cut-off famous around the globe, Theron herself doesn’t actually know what ghosting is. Mainly, she says, because she’s never done it. Not to Sean Penn, not to anyone.

Talking to WSJ, the actress revealed that widely reported stories about her breakup with Penn aren’t just overly sensationalised, they’re plain not true.

Yes they’ve split and gone their separate ways, but in Theron’s version of events, it was all very amicable and drama-free.

“There is this need to sensationalise things,” she says of the entertainment media.

“When you leave a relationship there has to be some f***ing crazy story or some crazy drama. And the f***ing ghosting thing, like literally I still don’t even know what it is.

“It’s just its own beast. We were in a relationship and then it didn’t work anymore. And we both decided to separate. That’s it.”

Theron also dismissed rumours that she and Penn had planned to adopt more children together, and that she’d always been very clear with him about having boundaries when it came to her son Jackson and recently adopted daughter August.

“The stories saying that Sean was going to adopt Jackson and all of that were not true. It’s not something that happens in 18 months. You can’t do that to a child.

“So there was an understanding that I was a single mom with a very young boy who I had to put in a situation where he understood that Mommy dates but that he does not have a father, you know what I mean?

“You have to be very careful and very honest about that stuff. And Sean was great with all of that… We had a very clear understanding. He knew that I was thinking about filing for another adoption but that we weren’t filing together.”

During the interview Theron also turns her signature frankness and honesty to the topic of unequal pay between men and women in Hollywood.

Referencing the Sony scandal, where leaked emails revealed the pay gap between stars including Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and the cast of American Hustle, Theron explains how she held-off signing up to The Huntsman sequel until equal pay between herself and Chris Hemsworth had been guaranteed.

“Look, when I saw that Jennifer Lawrence made what she made in comparison to Bradley Cooper, I was definitely shocked,” she says.

“The way people have been writing about it, it sounds like the Sony hack was what motivated me [to demand equal pay].

“My feeling would have still been, 'if we’re going to do it again, shouldn’t we start on equal footing?' Because, trust me, we weren’t on equal footing there.”

“Charlize knows what she deserves,” says co-star Emily Blunt. “She wasn’t afraid to ask for it—or to work for it. Everything she gets, she’s earned.”
