Web chat: Poppy King

This week's lunchtime masterclass is with beauty entrepreneur Poppy King, aka The Lipstick Queen.

Poppy started her first lipstick brand aged 18, just six months out of high school. She had no experience in beauty or make-up but simply couldn't find anything she liked - "they were all thin, slimy and too greasy feeling."

She wanted lipstick of the 1940s; rich, opaque and full of colour. So she found a business partner, manufacturers to mix up lipstick and approached a string of retailers. The Melbourne-based business, Poppy, was soon a success and specialised in a range of lipsticks and lip glosses.

In 2002, having been through all the highs and lows of running her own business, Poppy was headhunted and moved to New York to join a large cosmetics company. However her "fascination, obsession and borderline insanity regarding specialized lipsticks and lip products" would not leave her and in 2011, she again set up her own beauty line, Lipstick Queen.

Lipstick Queen "is not your average brand" according to Poppy; it's customer-focused and every single product is hand-picked by Poppy to showcase texture, unique quality and inspiring packaging. Lipstick Queen is now available on QVC.
