Valerie and her husband Jonathan Dayton began their careers by directing and pioneering MTV show The Cutting Edge.
They continued to work at the leading edge of music television, directing award-winning videos and documentaries for artists including REM, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction, The Smashing Pumpkins, Macy Gray, Oasis, Weezer and The Ramones.
In 1998, Jonathan and Valerie co-founded Bob Industries, a leading commercial production company, where they have directed high profile television ads for VW, Sony Playstation and ESPN, among many others.
In 2006, they made their feature film directorial debut with Little Miss Sunshine, which redefined independent filmmaking, received worldwide critical acclaim, four Academy Awards nominations and won the Independent Spirit Award for best feature.
This year they return to the big-screen with offbeat romantic comedy Ruby Sparks (pictured above), out on 12 October and starring Zoe Kazan, Paul Dano, Antonio Banderas, Annette Bening and Steve Coogan.
