Jennifer Aniston has used her new Instagram presence to reveal how things ended up for Friends’ Ross and Rachel, 15 years down the line – and it’s not all fairytale endings…
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you’ll know that Jennifer Aniston has made her Instagram debut – and pretty much broke the internet in the process.
The actor went in strong with a Friends cast reunion snap pitched perfectly to those thousands of fans who still hanker for the 90s TV hit, nearly two decades after it wrapped.
Happily, Aniston was willing to take on the voice of her one-time alter ego, Rachel Green, too. When reality TV star Kaitlyn Bristowe joined the half million people commenting on Aniston’s first post, she posed the million-dollar question everyone wanted to know: “ARE YOU AND ROSS STILL TOGETHER!!???”
Aniston answered by quipping: “well we’re on a break.” Bristowe was so delighted by the response, she posted an Instagram shot of the moment (along with her own creative spin on the Friends title formula in the caption):
The exchange was a delicious throwback to the on-off relationship of the 90s; and the couple everyone rooted for, even with all their baggage.
As Friends fans will know, “on a break” is a line that came to define Ross ‘n’ Rachel’s turbulent chemistry following the series three episode, The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break.
When the couple’s anniversary plans go awry, Rachel suggest they take a break; and Ross ends up sleeping with a girl at the Xerox place. The phrase “on a break” scuppers every chance of a reunion there on in, with debate raging over whether Ross really cheated or not.
The pair go onto have a daughter, Emma, together; and the series finale brings about a heartwarming finale between the two.
But, over a decade on, it’s good to see Aniston introducing a healthy dose of reality to the fairytale ending. Somehow, it’s hard to imagine Ross and Rachel as being anything other than on-off.
In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, Aniston admitted she didn’t know why she chose to finally join Instagram this week. When Kimmel said, “You don’t do that kind of stuff,” Aniston replied that “a lot of people” were encouraging her to be on the platform, so she eventually gave in and joined.
“What you resists, persists, so what the hey,” she said. The actor is currently on a promotion trail for upcoming Apple TV+ series The Morning Show, which she’s starring in alongside Reese Witherspoon.
