There might be little future left for Tom and Shiv, but Ross isn’t necessarily convinced that there is such a thing as a comment that marks a point of no return. “Awful, hurtful things can be said in arguments that can be carried ever after but that still doesn’t mean that you can’t come back from it,” he says. “Coming back might take a long time of working through, rebuilding trust and proving that lessons have been learned.”

Surely, it depends on whether you think the relationship itself is worth salvaging. “After giving each other time, it’s important to talk about the argument, to own your part and acknowledge the other person’s perspective,” Dr Shakir says. “This is of course assuming this is a healthy relationship at its core.” If, once tempers have calmed, you genuinely believe that words and sentiments were exaggerated by emotion, and can be discussed rationally, then there may still be hope – but it might require putting your ego aside or owning up to your own bad behaviour too.
