“Will you watch Star Wars with me?”

Amy, 38, was close to her dad, who died in 2020, but they didn’t share the same taste in movies. She wished she had asked him to watch one of her favourite films with him. “I am gutted I never got to watch Star Wars with him because he’d never seen it. I’d have loved to have sat down and had a coffee with him afterwards to discuss his thoughts.”

“You taught me so much”

Mandy, 59, wishes she’d told her mum how much she had taught her about being a mother. She says: “Even though I parent differently, her love and support made me the loving mother I am today. Being a mother is my biggest achievement, and it was also hers.”

“What should we do with your remains?”

Before Cassie’s mum died, she wished she’d talked about what to do with her remains. The 36-year-old says: “We never talked about what she wanted to happen to her ashes and where she wanted to be scattered. We still have the ashes two years later and don’t know what to do with them.”

“What was it like being pregnant with me?”

Chloe ,34, is expecting her first child and can’t stop thinking about what that experience was like for her mum. “I always zoned out when my mum talked about pregnancy and birth because I found it a bit dull. Now that I’m going through it, I wish I’d been able to speak to her about everything. What did she crave? Was she excited? Or scared?”

“Did you have a good life?”

Laura, 49, says her mum was pretty stoical and didn’t give away many of her feelings, so it was hard to know if she was happy with how life turned out. “It seems like a strange question to ask someone who knows they are dying: ‘Did you have a good life?’ Knowing her, she would have said: ‘It was going well until I was told I had six months to live.’”
