In fact, according to extensive research by Dr Robin Dunbar – a friendship researcher and anthropology professor at the University of Oxford – most people can sustain five very close friendships, rather than focusing on just one.

“Remember that societal norms and expectations about friendships can vary widely, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to forming meaningful relationships,” says Dr Goddard-Crawley. “What matters most is that you are content with the connections you have and that they bring positivity and support to your life, regardless of whether you have a best friend or not.”

Shortland let go of the pressure to find a best friend during the pandemic, and has felt happier and more content as a result. “I think [the best friend myth] puts a lot of pressure on friendships for no reason,” she says. “I used to strive to have a best friend to the point where it was almost competitive, but that just used to make me feel worse. I’m happier now that I have my friends dotted around because each one knows me in a certain way and fulfils me in different ways – but I’m also not solely dependent on anyone.”
