She says that the “sense of separateness” in The Bear, which we see in both Claire and Carmy’s relationship and that of Cousin and Tiffany is “familiar”. “My ex would drink daily, smoke a lot, binge watch TV in a way that looked like depression, but as soon as work came he was on. Working as a chef is a whole other life – a way of being. It’s impossible to integrate [with romance] unless they’re really diligent about it,” she adds.

It’s difficult for the chefs, too. Jess*, 37, recently started working as a chef, which has had a profound effect on her relationship. “My shifts can range from five to 12.5 hours and my rotas are up on Saturday for the following week, so trying to plan time together is difficult,” she explains. “Service can go on until 11 at night and I’ll still need to prep and clean for the next morning, so I don’t get to see my partner as often as I used to.” She adds that she’s also tired and grumpy most of the time.

That’s not to say that chefs are a lost cause when it comes to love, though. Jane, 29, is an executive chef and tells me most chefs struggle to maintain a work-life balance, which can make romantic relationships feel impossible – something she’s fought to maintain in her own life.

“The difficulty of dating when you’re a chef is very real,” she says. “I’ve found myself thinking like Carmy and abandoning relationships because they’ll distract me from the job, but what kind of life is that?”

Jane adds that she believes a lot of this “work over everything” mentality comes from a culture of toxic masculinity. According to the Office for National Statistics, only 17% of chef positions in the UK are held by women, so most professional kitchens are male-dominated.
