Back in December, Barack Obama told Oprah Winfrey that he was planning on taking his family on holiday after they moved out of the White House.
“We’re going someplace warm,” the president told the talk show host. “See ya!”
As you’d expect from a principled man, Obama has been as good as his word. Barack and Michelle Obama have spent the last two months kicking back in various tropical locales – and the latest snapshot of the couple on holiday has brought particular joy to the internet.
The Obamas are currently staying in a resort in French Polynesia owned by Marlon Brando, along with their friends Bruce Springsteen, Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey. (Who knows, maybe Barack slipped her an invite after that December interview?)
In the viral photo, the former POTUS is seen taking a photo of his wife as she poses on the deck of a boat – prompting writer and Twitter user Madeleine Hill to dub him an “Instagram husband”.
The term “Instagram husband” was coined by US comedy group The Mystery Hour in late 2015, with a spoof video that claimed to reveal the truth behind every ‘aspirational’ Insta-feed. You know the ones we mean: the Instagram accounts made up of photos of fashionable women standing in front of photogenic backdrops, caught at just the right moment by a mystery photographer.
In the video, all of these Instagram photos are taken by the women’s nice-but-nerdy husbands, who spend their lives trailing around after their stylish wives with an iPhone camera in hand. “Behind every cute girl on Instagram is a guy like me, and a brick wall,” explains one Instagram husband.

In the boat photo, the famously fashionable Michelle appears to be wearing her hair in its natural loose Afro style, with a flowing black vest top and sandals. In other words, she looks amazing – so it makes sense that her husband would want (or she would ask him) to take a quick solo snap of her.
Hill’s followers quickly endorsed the assessment of Obama as an Instagram husband. Some imagined Barack and Michelle’s conversation...
Barack: "Why do you want the photo taken in square mode?"— Madeline Hill (@mad_hill) April 16, 2017
Michelle: "Just do it."
… While other Twitter users almost exploded in adoration:
That's bc Michelle is gorgeous AF! Look at that skin! You don't just NOT photograph that woman...— JustSomeChick (@Just_SomeChick) April 17, 2017
I miss them so much! Our parents need to come back and straighten out the mess we are in. Lol 💔😭— SweetGirl_Abby💖✨👣 (@ab_thurlow) April 17, 2017
And others, unable to find words to sum up how they felt, simply resorted to the universal language of GIFs.
