Perhaps the highlight of the trip was the visit to One&Only’s Morocco-inspired Oriental Hammam. Housed under a series of domes and winding corridors, I found myself being guided into a private massage room looking out onto a communal area where other women were getting their treatments.

After I stripped down to the tiniest treatment bikini bottoms, my therapist proceeded to rinse my skin, smother it in vitamin E-rich Moroccan soap and then, using a kessa glove, scrub me to within an inch of my life. No part of my body was left untouched, from my butt cheeks to my feet, my neck to my under-boobs. As the layers of dead skin came away, so did my inhibitions. She then applied a silky clay blended with rose extracts to purify the skin, before giving me a rose-scented massage and washing my hair like a mother tending to a small child. Honestly, I never wanted it to end.

The therapist was so tender. But the other thing it made me realise is that in other cultures, being naked around other women is totally normal – it’s a key part of wellness. As I walked back through the communal hammam area some 90 minutes later, I saw women chatting to each other as they were exfoliated and marvelled at how comfortable everyone seemed in their own bodies. I sat – glowing – an inch taller that night in a dress I’ve never had the confidence to wear before.
