Brighton has long been a favourite destination for Londoners looking to spend a day out of town. It’s glorious stretch of pebble beach and picture-postcard pier is wonderfully quiet in winter and worth seeing - whether you brave a swim or not is another matter.

Explore the many charity shops, independent book stores and delis on Western Road, before stopping for a coffee and a pastry at chic outpost Stoney Point. For lunch, stroll back towards the centre and stop off at one of the many small plates restaurants the city boasts. Anakuma, again on Western Road, serves punchy southeast Asian dishes, while Burnt Orange in the Lanes is a sophisticated spot for Mediterranean flavours. The halloumi in bergamot honey, sorrel hummus and smoked molasses pumpkin are must-haves. Spend the afternoon exploring the Lanes and North Laine, the bohemian heart of Brighton, where independent boutiques and quirky cafes line the colourful streets. Snoopers Paradise is a Brighton institution, choc-full of vintage and antique treasures, while Lavender/Room and Abode offer gorgeous glassware, trinkets and ceramics. Stop off for a drink and nibbles at either wine bar Ten Green Bottles or cosy pub The Basketmakers Arms before getting the train home again. At only an hour up the mainline, it’s close enough to do it all again next weekend and discover even more of the city by the sea.
