A travel company is offering cheaper holiday deals to those who have a higher number of Twitter followers.

The website, Hotelied promises discounts to people joining the site, depending on the figure of social media followers they can offer.

When you log in to the site you can link it up with up to five social media networking sites, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+.

Then, you can search for where you'd like to stay, with a choice of five cities - New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Portland and Tel Aviv.

The idea is if you have a higher number of followers on your social media networks you're more likely to give free advertising to the hotels you stay at, which is why Hotelied offers the discounts.

Using one of the Stylist.co.uk team's personal Twitter accounts, with a following of 2,700, we discovered you could get up to a 20% discount on top New York hotels, such as the fancy Sixty Lower East Side hotel.

However, using another personal account, with 100 followers, only a 10% discount was offered.
