Because of this, Booking.com predicts that travellers will flock to under-the-radar destinations like Valkenburg in the Netherlands and Chemnitz in Germany, alongside classic colder cities like Reykjavik, Iceland; Zagreb, Croatia; and Bergen, Norway. And when it comes to holiday activities, sun loungers and beach days are out in favour of trail walking, wild swimming and snow meditation.

Other trends identified by Booking.com include a new era of sleep tourism, increased interest in Indigenous cuisines and a focus on surrendering ourselves to the element of surprise, exploring the unknown and venturing into uncharted territory on holiday.

“As 2023 enters its final months and 2024 optimistically appears on the horizon, numbness, and detachment loom as a result of the perma-crisis, including increased cost of living and climate change concerns,” the report explains. “People around the world have emotionally checked out of the news agenda and events at home in order to take a much-needed breather.”
