Could you handle it? Sleep among the dead with Airbnb’s creepiest listing yet

If you're a regular user of Airbnb, you're probably used to the odd house rule: take your shoes off in the house, don't let the dog sleep on the bed, do not try to summon bad spirits. Wait, what?

That last one will come in handy if you're thinking of a stay at the home rental website's newest listing, which is (and we quote) “the world's largest graveyard” – the sprawling, bone-lined, skull-littered underground catacombs of Paris, home to the remains of approximately 6 million people. Cosy.

“Sweet dreams!” said all the dead people watching you sleep

The new listing is actually part of a competition in which two people can win the chance to stay overnight in the catacombs on Halloween (naturally).

The lucky, lucky couple also get the chance to ‘enjoy’ a private tour of the death-filled labyrinthine corridors before casually sitting down to a meal surrounded by their grinning skull hosts and listening to the pleasant strains of a violinist. Then they'll be settling down with their very own storyteller to hear some of the not-at-all terrifying legends of their temporary home.

Nicolas Ferrary, France Country Manager of Airbnb, said: “Our travelers are always on the lookout for original experiences, and what could be more unique for Halloween than spending a night among the bones and ghosts below Paris?”

“Cheers darling! What do you mean you've lost your appetite?”

The remains are said to have found their way there (with help, not on their own) between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries when the city's graveyards were closing due to public health risks. The catacombs have become a huge tourist attraction, but never before have guests been able to stay overnight.

If you're feeling daring, you can enter by visiting the listing on Airbnb before October 20th and explaining why you're brave enough to spend a night there. Should you happen to win, the house rules include respecting the peaceful sleep of Parisians and pledging not to follow the ghosts through the galleries. And you thought that elderly couple who wouldn't leave you to watch Netflix in peace were bad.

Might be ever so slightly off-putting when doing your makeup

In one of the most romantic citys in the world, why not burrow underground into a maze of death?

“What's that noise? Oh just me screaming on the inside while rooted to the spot”

One of the house rules is “Do not follow the ghosts through the galleries”

Try not to summon bad spirits either, apparently
