We've heard of people taking a digital detox, and we're well versed in its benefits, but somehow we still haven't quite got round to putting down our phone and ignoring that never-ending stream of incoming emails.

And we're certainly not the only ones: research suggests the average person checks their phone no less than 85 times a day, spending a third of the time they are awake plugged into their device. Once you add in the time we spend on computers, laptops, iPads and iPods, that figure is sure to increase even further.

If, like us, you find it hard to build technology-free time into your daily routine, heading off on a complete digital detox holiday could be the answer. It may sound extreme, but going cold turkey on technology could be the best thing you ever do - and who knows, you might actually like it.

So, rather than telling yourself you'll put down your phone in just one minute (just ten more Instagram pictures... and ten more), book yourself onto one of TripAdvisor Vacation Rental's recommended digital-free retreats and get exploring. We've picked our top ten locations, from a rustic cabin in a Canadian Canyon to a hidden beach hut in Mexico.

We can't think of anywhere we would rather be...
