Fundraisers are going up against millionaires (even billionaires) to buy out a private island and return it the the public of New Zealand.

The clear water, seven-hectare beach in the Abel Tasman National Park on the Awaroa Inlet is currently on the market for $2 million (£907,124).

Resident Duane Major took matters into his own hands and created a Givealittle page for Kiwis to pledge money to buy the land.

"We believe there are lots of people out there who also want the opportunity to have that kind of place owned and shared by everyone in New Zealand," reads the donation page.

"We think it is a realistic chance to permanently take it off the elite property market for future generations of New Zealanders to enjoy. Its certainly worth a shot."

So far 2,387 backers have donated $166,079 (£75,327) to the cause, which has 19 days left to raise the required amount.

"If every New Zealander donated 50c (23p) the beach would be guaranteed to be available for everyone," Major told 3 News.

He says the idea to crowdfund the beach was inspired by some "lively banter" with his brother-in-law on Christmas day.

"In the middle of the banter was this example of a most beautiful piece of earth being sold in the heart of our beloved Abel Tasman National Park. We started to dream what if we could start a givelalittle campaign to purchase for everyone to enjoy forever."

"So after the classic "I WILL, IF YOU WILL" conversation, here we are."

He describes the plot of land - which comes with three buildings dotted amidst the mature greenery - as "the absolute gem piece of Awaroa".

"This place is special - a slice of paradise."

While the beach is currently open to the public, it's essentially a private property which means someone could take away locals' rights to walk through the area.
