When we heard EasyJet reduced its cabin baggage size allowance by a third, we set ourselves a challenge. Whisking off to a different country for the weekend is easy, but carrying a bag too large or heavy can turn what was meant to be a thrifty getaway into a bill of unforeseen expenses. So, the team decided to take on four budget airlines - EasyJet, Ryan Air, BMI and Monarch - pick four destinations perfect for a short break and meticulously pack 12 key items in a cabin-friendly bag. Here are the results...

Ryan Air to Stockholm

"I visited Gothenburg last year and loved it, so I want to go back and visit Stockholm as I’ve heard it’s really cool, plus they love coffee (they drink 4.5 on average per day per person), which means lots of cafes to stop off in and sample the local pastries (cinnamon rolls, yes please)," says Elinor Block, writer at

Easyjet to Marrakech

"Chic and sunny with a hint of ethereal glamour, Marrakech has always been on my hit list of cities to visit. I’d love to get lost in a maze of souks, spend an afternoon soaking up the beautiful Moorish architecture or pop by a boutique hotel for a mint tea in a shady courtyard lined with palm trees. At night, I’d head for Jemaa el Fna for food stalls and live music," says Anna Brech, writer at

Monarch Airlines to Faro, Portugal

"I’m craving a beach holiday. But as much as I want to saturate Vitamin D over a weekend, I won’t feel satisfied unless I’ve explored a new culture on holiday. That’s why Faro is perfect. Beyond the resorts, I hear it’s a fairly undeveloped walled town with a quiet, romantic charm. Sounds like bliss, right?" says Sejal Kapadia, digital assistant at

"I’m a fan of experimental fashion and I’ve always wanted to visit Antwerp because of the city’s connection with designers like Dries Van Noten, Martin Margiela and Ann Demeulemeester. Antwerp has history as a cloth trading centre and a lot of young designers from the Fashion Department of the University of Fine Arts. I also like moules et frites and Belgian chocolate," says Anna Fielding, editor of
