Planning the holidays we'd like to go on is one of our all-time favourite pursuits.

Like tea breaks or long, leisurely baths, there's really never a bad time to ponder exotic getaways.

The only difficulty we have is narrowing down our daydream options. Will it be a five-star sea safari in Mozambique? A chic city break to Copenhagen? Or an Indonesian beach retreat?

The release of new flight routes for summer 2015 serves as a nifty tool for narrowing down our would-be holiday choices.

With Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and more all naming their new journeys out of London next year, we have a ready-made hit list of places to go.

From the Moroccan surfer's paradise of Essaouria to the chilled and remote Caribbean beaches of Tobago and the star-gazing haven that is the Isle of Man, here are five places that should be firmly on your radar for 2015:

Cagliari, Sardinia

British Airways is opening up a new route from Heathrow to Cagliari, a lesser-known gem on Sardinia's breath-taking coastline, from April next year. This ancient port is nestled in the beautiful Bay of the Angels (Golfo degli Angeli), with eight miles of aquamarine beach, picturesque bays and surrounding wilderness to explore. Don't miss the infamous pink flamingos that reside in the city ponds and the picturesque palazzi, domes and white limestone walls and towers of a place D.H. Lawrence once described as looking like "Jerusalem without trees".

To stay: The Hotel Miramare is located moments away from the city harbour, with a thriving restaurant and arts scene. It boasts a small orchid greenhouse and an on-site spa offering  Ayurvedic treatments.

Flight time: 2 hours 45 minutes

Tobago, southern Caribbean

From next March, Virgin Atlantic will re-open its service to the smaller of the two islands that make up the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, to the delight of sun-worshippers everywhere. The slow pace of life here is central to its enduring charm; unlike other Caribbean destinations, it's not a place for partying or enormous, luxury resorts. Instead, you'll be greeted with a warm welcome and a cold rum punch or two as you soak in the island's many delights, including a breathtaking underwater world that's home to coral reef, manta rays and giant sea turtles. Take time to explore Tobago's picture-postcard beaches, inland forest terrain and friendly fishing villages.

To stay: Cuffie River Nature Retreat is a romantic eco-tourism guest house nestled in the oldest protected tropical rainforest in the western hemisphere, with exotic birds, waterfalls, white-sand beaches and mountains all around.

Flight time: 9 hours 50 minutes

Essaouira, Morocco

easyJet will become the first UK airline to run direct flights to Essaouria, on Morocco’s western coast, from May 2015. This "wind city of Africa" has a relaxed, artsy vibe, with surfers and painters alike drawn to its breezy coastline and light, beautiful architecture. It's more laid-back than other Moroccan cities, but with the same kind of charm, from its bustling walled medina (a Unesco World Heritage site) to narrow alleyways and a thriving harbour. Pop by the market for freshly grilled seafood with salad or handcrafted ceramics and rugs, attend a woodcarving workshop at one of the local galleries, book in at the hammam or head out into the surrounding desert for an adventure like no other.

To stayHeure Bleue Palais, a glamorous 19th Century residence overlooking the bay of Mogador, comes with a rooftop pool and a rock 'n roll guest alumni that includes Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley.

Flight time: 3 hours 40 minutes

Isle of Man, the Irish Sea

For a break that's a little closer to home, head to the Isle of Man, a remote and beautiful self-governing region in the middle of the Irish Sea. From March next year, Exeter-based airline flybe will be offering a new direct route from London Stansted to this glorious 32-mile long island. Due to the lack of light pollution, it's one of the best places for stargazing in Europe and its natural landscape is home to a fantastic array of wildlife, from whales, dolphins and seals to sea birds such as guillemot and puffins. Its long sandy beaches and temperate climate make it a great holiday destination at any time of year, but summer is great for basking shark spotting and open water swimming.

To stay: Aaron House is a Victorian-themed guest house with individual, eccentric and charming rooms and sea views over Chapel Bay and the Harbour. Great, homemade cooking and a warm welcome have earnt it stellar reviews on Tripadvisor.

Flight time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Zante, Greece

Zante is one of three new Greece destinations unveiled by budget airline Monarch for summer 2015. This Ionian Sea paradise, known as Zakynthos in Greece, is a lush green island studded with olive groves, vineyards, picturesque mountain villages and secluded beach coves. Avoid the tourist hot spots of the eastern and southeastern coast and instead head to the northern and southern capes for turquoise waters and a taste of authentic island life.

To stay: Boutique hotel Galini is a luxurious hideaway nestled in the remote northern part of the island, near to the village of Volimes, famous for its handmade lace, cheese, honey and wine.
